Getting Around Vancouver

SSLC Translink

Vancouver is a beautiful city that inspires exploration! Luckily for SSLC students, every unique neighborhood in the area is accessible by the public transit system, BC TransLink. Servicing both SSLC Vancouver and Surrey campuses, Translink services is a great way to get around the Lower Mainland. Whether you’re heading to Grouse Mountain for the fresh powder or Deep Cove for a West Coast hike, the Compass card gives you access to it all!

SSLC Translink CompassBuying a compass card is a great option if you plan on using public transit frequently when in Vancouver.  If you are 5-18 years old you can buy an orange concession card. If you are 19+ years, you can buy a blue adult compass card. These cards can be purchased for $6 online, by phone or in person at London Drugs, the Compass Customer Service Center, the West Coast Express Office or other select stores. Additionally, one can buy an adult pass at any of the Compass Vending Machines at the SkyTrain stations. This $6 deposit is refundable when you return your card to the Customer Service Center or West Coast Express office.

To suit your traveling needs, TransLink offers three pass options- the monthly pass, stored value or the day pass. For those that will be using transit every day, the monthly pass is recommended. For those who want to use it occasionally, stored value is a great option. The day pass is great if you travel occasionally but know you’ll be using transit a lot on one particular day.

The Metro Vancouver transit system is divided into three zones. The amount you pay depends on what zone(s) you travel in, what compass card you have and what method of transport you are using- bus, SkyTrain or SeaBus. When taking the SeaBus or the SkyTrain you will be charged more if you travel in zone 2 or 3. However when traveling on the bus, regardless of where your destination is, you will only pay zone 1 rates. These SeaBus and SkyTrain zone fares are in effect weekdays until 6:30 pm. Outside of this time- weekdays after 6:30 pm, weekends and holidays- all travel is subject to zone one rates.
