There is no doubt about it learning English can be difficult but the good people at Sprott Shaw Language College would really like to help. For the current students of SSLC or potential students that are still on their way to one of our four campuses, we have some ESL learning tips for you! Don’t worry these tips are so simple you can do them anywhere, at home or on the go. These tips are meant to be fun and are ways to help you improve your English learning outside of the classroom.
Tip #1 – WATCH A LOT OF TELEVISION AND MOVIES
Disclaimer – make sure you’re watching English shows and it’s not distracting you from your studies! With that said, watch as much TV you can. If you watch shows that have common themes with your program or with what you want to do as a career you will definitely pick up a few terms and phrases that will help you in going forward. There is also a strong chance for you to improve your listening and pronunciation skills. For instance, our Business English (BE) program uses a lot of common business terms and watching shows like Shark Tank can help you develop your understanding of those terms and know when to properly use them. Game shows can really help Power Speaking & Modern Media (PMM) students with their confidence and presentation skills. Watching comedies can help you understand common comedic slangs and puns. You will see how sarcasm can change the meaning of a sentence to something completely different. Pretty much watching your favorite English-speaking shows can help you hear and visualize proper sentence structure.
Tip #2 – SET GOALS & REWARDS
Yes “perfecting” the English language may be the ultimate goal and reward but the road to accomplishing that can be a long one. SSLC offers various levels of ESL and the range of difficulty may differ but to advance at each level and eventually enter a specialized program is a realistic goal to have. So to make it more fun and dynamic set up a goal and reward system. For instance for any improvement in your English skill, a good grade or anything else positive you give yourself a treat. You can justify your reward as small treats or save a few rewards from accomplished goals to make for a bigger reward. Hold yourself accountable, if you don’t make your goal then no reward! This will make you try harder the next time. Doing this makes studying less stressful and everything you accomplished along the way will be very much earned.
Tip #3 – ENGLISH ONLY RULE
SSLC exercises one rule in all campuses and that is the ‘English Only’ rule. Basically, if you are in class or anywhere on campus, you can only speak English. This is not meant to punish anyone, in fact, it is meant to help students practice speaking in English. This rule is really helpful, some students like Hyeonmook found this really helpful. You can apply this rule outside of school as well by speaking only English with your friends, family and even your homestay. Doing so will help you with speaking and with discipline.
