Vancouver Island University (VIU) is one of Sprott Shaw Language College (SSLC)’s partners who recognizes the college’s Pathway program. VIU is a Canadian public university located in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island and is ranked as the 5th best university in British Columbia by uniRank. VIU created a competition; which is shoot a 1-minute video about why you should win their VIU tour trip. After you must post it on your Facebook and tag their page and whoever wins (by having the most creative video) will receive a free trip to VIU by float plane!
Jing Yi was the lucky student from SSLC who won this competition. Saleem, one of SSLC’s student advisors, accompanied Jing Yi on her trip and documented the whole experience. The prize trip took place on March 1st. Coal Harbour was the meeting point to take the seaplane, Jing Yi was also lucky to be chosen as a co-pilot, being able to sit in the cockpit next to the pilot. The pilot was so friendly and he gave her a brief explanation about the flight deck. The duration of the flight from Vancouver to Nanaimo was only 15 minutes long.
Lisa Jaster the International Marketing & Recruitment Coordinator at Vancouver Island University welcomed Jing Yi, with a big smile at Nanaimo Harbour. Lisa took Jing Yi around on a short tour in the city. Upon arriving at VIU, Lisa took us to the Centre for International Education which is the place to go for international students as it offers the support and all the extra services that they may need. Lisa handed our schedules, maps, tickets for a prize draw and a free VIU Starbuck’s Card. The campus is very organized, each building has a number that increases along with the incline. It makes it easy to figure out where you are on campus and using the map, we were able to get to our sessions on time.
First, the trip, then being selected as copilot, just when you thought that was it, Jing Yi won the draw prize and got a VIU jersey. After finishing the Teaching and Education session, it was time for lunch. Jing Yi went to attend Lisa’s session about Current and Future International Students and it was very informative and fun. When it was time to leave to catch the ferry going back to Vancouver, Jing Yi won another draw and got a second jersey! However, she was kind enough to give it to another student. Lisa took Jing Yi on another drive around Nanaimo before heading to the ferry terminal. The day ended with a beautiful ferry ride back to Vancouver.
